It’s a chicken!

27 Mar

The tests came back protein level “chicken”, which means its on! The best news of the day is that because Grace is no longer in the breech position, we can attempt a vaginal delivery. As of this morning, we thought it was an automatic C Section and that was something we were dealing with. It still may go that way, but Jenn gets to give it the old college try. She is very excited and nervous. Scared has officially left the building as the waiting game ended. We are in the absolute best place in Northern California for this and we are getting the best care. Grace will also get the best care when she arrives.

Currently, we are beginning the labor inducing process, which can take awhile. Sometime between now and let’s say 36 hours, my whole world will be R-O-C-K-E-D!

I know you are all praying and wishing us luck and the best. Keep it up. We have a bit to go yet.

Love you all.

Brad (and Jenn (and the imminently arriving Grace))

Goals Schmoals

27 Mar

If you know my wife, there are couple things that permeate everything she does:

  1. Her projects take A LOT of effort, often by many people who did not previously know they were going to get involved.
  2. She is really bad at waiting for things, once she knows what she is going to do…I call this personality “Instant Gratification Jenn”.
  3. Everything she works on turns out beautifully.
So here is where we are…

Just after I posted the last update, we had a visit from our favorite preeminent perinatologist and sailor Michael Katz (below).

This man loves my wife!

I could never feel more comfortable saying that about anyone. Dr Katz has a problem. He has two patients with competing problems. One of them is a perfectly healthy 3 and a half pounds and wants to get bigger and stronger before she heads out into the world. The other patient Jenn weighs…um…more than 3 and a half pounds. Her body, also “instant gratification”, no longer wants to be pregnant. So Dr Katz needs to make the decision of when to take action to preserve the health and well being of both my girls.

In his assessment, that decision is coming soon. We will know more as the days/hours progress, but it looks like between now and next Wednesday our lives will be full of Grace. At 30 weeks and a day, Grace is well past the point of huge concern (It seems that everyone has a premie story that turns out better than well and we do appreciate the stories). That said, she will likely need lots of special attention and she will be in the NICU at CMPC until at least the 35 week point (which is true of any birth) but probably a little longer.

We are of course very emotional about this. You can pick any combination of scared, relieved, excited and nervous and you will understand how our hours are passed. For the time being, nothing has changed but our expectations of the next few days.

I will keep up the updating, all you have to do is keep up the reading. Those of you getting emails, remember that you only get those emails at the end of the day. You may find things out faster by checking the blog on your own steam.

We love you all.

Brad (and Jenn (and Grace coming soon))

Health Update

27 Mar
  • Cooking time: 30 Weeks and 1 Day
  • Current Status: In love with her iMac
  • BIG Goal: 41 Days to Go!
  • Next Major Milestone (32 Weeks) : 13 Days to Go!

I thought I would take a moment and let you know how she is really doing. In official medical terms, it would be called “pretty good”. Doctors come in every day and seem to agree that there is nothing that has them worried having to go in after Grace anytime soon.

That said, there are ups and downs. The ups include great blood work, a healthy galloping Grace and a mostly comfortable Jenn. The downs include an elevated and occasionally spiking blood pressure, some random ocular migraine-ish things and an occasionally bored Jenn with atrophying muscles.

We are waiting for the end of her 24-hour urine catch to see how much protein is in there. That is apparently one of the bigger indicators of impending Grace. The numbers are inexact (to me) but its ok to have as much as a cube of tofu, but more than a free range chicken and we have a problem. So far, her protein levels have been tofu-good and we want to watch for her starting to trend towards the chicken.

As for the list of bad things…we watch the blood pressure and relax her and let the doctors think about whether to medicate it, hope the migraine things don’t get bad, give her a computer to fight the boredom and stretch her out so she has enough power to push when the iMac tells her to.

The current feeling is universally optimistic for 32 weeks and decidedly mixed on the BIG goal. We will keep shooting for it and plan accordingly for Grace being an Aries or a Taurus.

The "Other Man" Arrives.

The only other thing that Jenn wants to spend more time with than me arrived yesterday to keep her company…her iMac. Honestly, she couldn’t have been happier if I had enrolled myself in sensitivity classes and professed a desperate desire to do round-the-clock laundry. I don’t think she will be needing me much for the next few weeks. If I can write iDeliver, a program to tell her to breathe and push then I can go take our honeymoon.

As if that wasn’t enough excitement for the day, she got a new, more modern table to put it on and a new bed. The new bed is significant because it doesn’t have stirrups subtly tucked beneath it. It is apparently much more comfortable and, more importantly, it doesn’t constantly suggest imminent baby.

Also pictured is Debbie the fabulous night nurse. Sadly, we won’t have her for ever because Debbie is a “Strike Nurse”. She is only here until Wednesday, helping out while the CMPC regulars are out fighting THE MAN for 401K matching and the need for qualified available staff so they can take lunch and know that their patients are as safe as when they are lording over them like mother hens.
