34 Weeks and Coming Home SOON!

23 Apr

I don’t know if Grace is going to be 10 minutes early for every event, or if she is going to claim that being early all the time in the first few weeks of her life makes up for showing up late for the rest of her life.

At 34 weeks and just shy of 4 weeks out of the belly, little Grace just keeps racking up the “it-would-be-early-for-her-to-be-[blank]” statements, starting with [born], moving most recently to [breastfeeding] and heading quickly towards [going home]!

The tubes are gone! She is now eating every meal, from one kind of nipple or another, on her own schedule! With this new “ad-hoc” feeding schedule, we need to watch her weight to make sure she is eating enough. She breastfeeds a couple times a day now but the only ways to really tell if she is getting enough are wet diapers (which she has) and new ounces. Yesterday’s 70 gram gain (bringing her to almost 4 lbs 11 oz) is wonderful, but it is still too early to know what the feeding change is doing.

What does all this mean?

Basically, it means that little Grace is going to graduate to “Take Home Baby” status before anyone thought, possibly as early as next Wednesday, April 30th!

[pause for cheers and applause]

Needless to say, we are ecstatic at the news and working on the house furiously to make sure that Grace is not embarrassed to be our daughter from the very first minute.

But wait…before you start buying plane, bus, ferry or BART tickets (or just getting in the car) to come visit…remember she still isn’t supposed to be born yet. We are going to have to give her time to get used to life outside of the sterile NICU environment. That means we have to maintain extremely limited visitation for now. We are not building a plastic bubble for her just yet, but we are told that we have to keep the “worst of the germs” away for at least a couple weeks. I am still not exactly sure what the “worst of the germs” means, but when I use that phrase with people that have kids, they nod knowingly and scare me just a little.

Freedom! One down, one to go!

21 Apr

Just in time to enjoy the spring, Jenn has been sprung from her bed-rest shackles. Her blood pressure appears under enough medicated control that Jenn no longer is in the protective custody prescribed by her doctors. This is a conditional release that still requires her to take it easy, check in regularly and stay out of trouble. I get the feeling that laundry is still considered a crime in this society.

Meanwhile, on cellblock N, Grace (pictured below knocking back a bottle of the good stuff) is still on her best behavior and growing so fast no box can keep her. She could be out on the streets before anyone expects. April 30th marks her 35th week and the first day she could be freed, so all bets are off (or on if you roll that way) on how long until the whole family is home.

Grace Topless

18 Apr

IMG_0424.JPG, originally uploaded by Lincoln Topliff.

Already our little girl is thinking out of the box…and sleeping…and eating too. Last night they told us she might start the process of moving out of the Isolette to something without a roof, which means she would have to start regulating her own temperature as they turned off the heater. When we got here today, she had already been moved to a tray (or as they call it here, a “crib”). Her temp has been fluctuating a bit, so the box looms next to her, but so far, so good.

In feeding news, Grace is now taking one 36ml feeding per 8 hour shift from a bottle and the rest through the tube. This is much faster progress than expected and the nurses believe she could do more. The doctors like to be a little more conservative. We are also trying the breast here and there, but that can be tiring (for all of us) and we want her to spend the calories growing and heating herself.

All in all, her parents could not be prouder. It won’t be long until she is home and loudly shattering the false sense of security we have been slowly falling into.

The Pineapple Express to Honeydewtown

17 Apr

As I am writing this (on the day after her 33rd Weekiversary!), Grace is working on becoming a pineapple. Early this morning on our regular checkin call with the NICU, we learned that she had reached 1810 grams which is really close to 4 lbs, which is pretty much a pineapple.

While we were pregnant, we subscribed to regular updates on our pregnancy from Babycenter.com which uses food analogies to put your baby’s size in some sort of context. When we first found out about Grace, she was less than a poppy seed and by the time we got our first update, she was a sesame seed.

Where to now?

Earlier, I mentioned Grace’s weight goal to get out of the NICU was about 2kg or 4.4lbs or 92% of a cantaloupe. Upon reading the instruction manual for our car seat (which I admit to with a lot of hesitation and embarrassment), I found that it works well for preemies but it lists the minimum weight at 5 lbs (about the size of a honeydew melon).

So that is our line in the produce aisle…

Grace, Mommy and Daddy will love you, no matter what fruit or vegetable you resemble, but we really, really, really want to bring you home (safely). So keep eating and growing and aim for the honeydew, but you will always be a sesame seed to us.

Welcome to the party, Luke Franklin Starke

16 Apr

OK this is getting ridiculous. Now all of my friends are giving birth on my birthday (thanks Kirstin for holding your pregnancy together). Luke came into the world (in NYC) last night as a little bit of a surprise. I haven’t heard the details, but at 37 weeks, at least one of the individuals involved was ready. Melissa and Paul, the proud parents, nearly got kicked out of their birthing class a few weeks earlier for finding everything funny. You guys still think this is funny? Is Luke a clown? Is he here to amuse you?

We look forward to meeting him in person!

Amazing Grace takes her first bottle

16 Apr

A moving picture show of Grace and her feat of incredible maturity. We didn’t expect a lot of bottle success, as it has been only a short 33 weeks since she was a zygote. She defied expectations and downed the bottle in about 15 minutes and digested it almost completely. Try that with one of them “Take-Home Babies”!

People have asked if we are now ready to breast feed. The simple answer is that we certainly are. Grace, on the other hand, probably not so much. She will have to practice, practice, practice. Breast are more difficult to coordinate than bottles and both burn a lot of the calories in the effort. She needs those calories to grow, so we will not push her too hard and she will still get most of her feedings by tube. Great start, though, Gracie!

Welcome Charlotte Anne Gellman!

16 Apr

While I have been told several times that this was not a birthday present for me, I still have trouble processing the idea. My college roommate Lee and his lovely wife Clay (and their daughter Lucy by proxy) welcomed their daughter into the world last night just down the hall from where her future-friend Grace was sleeping. Charlotte Anne came into the world at 10:57 PM at a respectable 8 lbs, 6 oz. I saw sleeping Charlotte and the happy/tired couple this morning and all are doing well.

I see a lot of strollers and parks for me and Lee in the coming years, in addition to the diapers and tantrums (when we get really old).

First Bottle!

15 Apr

What better birthday present could there be from my little girl? She just surprised us all by taking her entire feeding in her first bottle! Mommy and Daddy are suitably impressed!
